There are wine dinners… and then there are Prosopa wine dinners.
On Thursday, 1st October, we welcome one of the Cape’s great historic names to Pretoria for an intimate Lanzerac Wine Evening & Gourmet Dinner — four courses, five carefully selected wines and, most importantly, the people and stories behind them.
Dating back to 1692 and nestled beneath the mountains of Stellenbosch’s beautiful Jonkershoek Valley, Lanzerac is woven into the history of South African wine. It is also famously the home of the world’s first commercially bottled Pinotage — a legacy that seems particularly fitting considering exactly how we intend ending this evening.
Our host for the night is Lanzerac’s newly appointed winemaker, Michael Roets. Pretoria born and raised, Michael returns home for the evening after spending the past few years intimately involved with Lanzerac’s vineyards. Before stepping into his new role, he served as the estate’s viticulturist and farm manager — meaning he knows these vineyards from the soil upwards.
And, we should probably mention, he is rather dashingly handsome too.
So even if you somehow lose interest in the wine, all is not lost.
Together with Michael, Chef Patron Dino Fagas and Prosopa’s in-house sommelier Moses Magwaza have put together an evening that journeys from fresh and elegant to rich, structured and unmistakably South African.
We begin at 18h00 with a glass of crisp Lanzerac Cap Classique as everyone arrives.
From there, the four-course dinner begins.
The Lanzerac Chardonnay accompanies our first course and we might sneak in a little Sauvignon Blanc to appease our Pretoria guests, followed by the Lanzerac Merlot with the second.
For the main course we move on to the magnificent Le Général — one of Lanzerac’s serious reds and a wine deserving of a suitably serious plate and palate.
And then, dessert.
There really could be no more appropriate ending to an evening celebrating Lanzerac than their spectacular Pinotage — the variety with which the estate shares such an important piece of South African wine history.
R980 per person inclusive of the four-course gourmet dinner with five accompanying Lanzerac wines.
Our Gourmet Wine Dinners have become evenings that many of our regular guests diarise well in advance — good food, exceptional bottles, interesting people and, inevitably, a few stories by the end of the night.
This one has all the ingredients to be particularly memorable.
Seats are limited, and we suggest booking sooner rather than discovering afterwards that everyone else had a wonderful evening without you.
We look forward to raising a glass with you.
